We’re partnering with On the Rocks for our next Core Detroit event, happening on Wednesday, July 25 from 5-8 PM at theUDetroit Cafe. Awesome food specials and complimentary BBQ samples will be provided by D-town BBQ (latest new BBQ in Detroit!), and drinks featuring Michigan-bottled High Liquors will be flowing. But to top it off, none other than Dick Wagner, guitar legend and hit songwriter, will be making a special guest appearance. During the night, Dick will give interviews, perform unplugged, and hang out with his fans and friends while also signing copies of his critically acclaimed new book, Not Only Women Bleed.

Bob Bauer, Dick’s longtime friend and Detroit radio legend, will be our primary host, as well as Lola George from Detroit Live. Without a doubt, this is the place for you to be on Wednesday night.

So, who is Dick Wagner? This Detroit area native was significant in defining an era of rock through his work as lead guitarist and songwriter for some of music’s most famous artists, including Aerosmith, Kiss, Lou Reed, The Frost, Tina Turner, Hall & Oates, Little Richard, and Frank Sinatra. He’s most widely known, though, for his groundbreaking collaborations with Alice Cooper on multiple albums, singles, and tours.

With this impressive resume, it’s shocking how few rock fans could actually tell you who Dick Wagner is. That would be because most of his work was behind-the-scenes and sometimes even unaccredited. For example, a recent article in the Huffington Post recalls how Wagner would sometimes substitute for Aerosmith’s Joe Perry and KISS’s Ace Frehley in the studio; yet no one was allowed to reveal that it was Wagner on some of the tracks until recently. The beautiful thing about Wagner, though, is that fame was never his goal; his goal was to become a good guitar player, and if fame came along the way than he would take that on too. But now that the word is out, it’s almost a relief to not have to keep it a secret anymore. Check out this excerpt from theHuffington Post:

“I received a lot of ‘non-credit’ credits and some attention over the years, but my favorite may be one time when I took my sons to see Aerosmith at the San Antonio Convention Center,†Wagner fondly recalls. “Steven Tyler put his arm around me in front of all those people backstage and said, ‘This is the guy who helped us sell three million records.’ I really appreciate that more than anything.â€

Dick’s life is detailed in his new book, Not Only Women Bleed. We had the opportunity to meet with Dick a couple of weeks ago, so believe us when we say that this isn’t an opportunity you want to pass up.
