Thank You For Being A Friend For the first time in at least 18 months my outdoor crew and I got back out into the world and I’ve got some people to thank for that. First and foremost…thank you for listening…we are nothing without you. Second, thank you to the folks at Harmonie Park, the Pastoria brothers Brian and Mark…and Julie and Bill and everybody else whose names I either can’t remember at the moment or am not sure want to be named at this point. Thank you to my crew on site, Ray Templin and Theresa Hebert. You did a stellar job. You did the best we could with what we had and we stepped off into the unknown with vigor and guts and determination to deliver for everybody who was involved. I absolutely could not have made this happen without you. Thank you to Joe Nighswonger of The Great Lakes Bow Hunters web site for inviting us in the first place…100,000 kids in the outdoors in 2011...we are behind you! Thank you to Tom Huggler and the folks at Show Span for giving us the opportunity to do what we do and for your support of my campfire over all these years…Outdoorama was the first outdoor show I ever did and Tom…you were one of the first guests I ever had at my campfire…hopefully we’ll see you at the Woods-n-Water show in Imlay City in the fall. Thanks to Ken Neely and KD Outdoors for your unwavering support right from the very beginning of our campfire. God bless you and your family and thanks for the booth space this year! Thanks to our guests: Jim Miller, Mike Pitiglio, Tim Web, Joel Fedorcheck, and Mark Spindler for making the event extra special. Your support of our campfire means much to me! Our outdoor heritage here in the Detroit area and Michigan is very important to me. It helped shaped me into the person I am today…it made us the people we are today. The outdoor sports teaches us a respect for one another, the land, the animals and the higher power that made all these things possible. Our future as a nation is with our kids…take a kid outside to play…it’s the best thing you can do for them and for you. From the bottom of my heart…Thank you and God bless. Uncle Bob

Go Outside And Play! By Bob Bauer This is not intended to win over the anti hunting establishment. I could care less about the anti’s. The goal of the anti hunting establishment is to stop hunting at all costs because they find it personally offensive no matter what the truth is! I discovered a long time ago that 10% of the people are into the outdoor sports and love it. Another 10% are anti hunting and fishing and will stop at nothing to end the outdoor sports all together. The other 80% don’t understand what it is we do and many would like to participate if only somebody would just show them! This is dedicated to that 80%, especially single parents. This weekend, today and Saturday the 25th and 26th the annual rite of spring know as Outdoorama will take place at the Suburban Collection Showcase in Novi. You will be able to see everything there is to do in the outdoors and then some! Want to learn how to fish? You don’t need a thirty thousand dollar fishing boat, thirty thousand dollar truck and two thousand dollars worth of gear to get started, although you could certainly go that route if you had the available cash! All you need is a twenty dollar rod and reel combo, hook, line, sinker & bobber and some free tips. And you can get them at Outdoorama! Would you like to learn how to hunt? Yesterday, Thursday, my crew and I went down to cover the open of the show. We walked around, shot some video, talked to some of the vendors including my buddy Joe Nighswonger @ the Great Lakes Bow Hunters booth (where we will broadcast live from on Saturday from noon till 2pm.). After a while we made our way over to my old friend Ken Kneelys booth from KD Outdoors, long time sponsor of my outdoor show (we will broadcast from there from 4 to 6pm on Saturday.). One of Kens vendors is PSE bows. You can go to their booth and check out the bows, bows of all kinds, and you can get them set up especially for you and you can get tips and tricks and actually get instruction on how to shoot a bow right there at their booth…you can shoot the bow as well! One of the members of my crew is our 23 year old intern, Theresa. Never shot a bow in her life. The guys from PSE took the time to set up a bow for her to shoot, showed her how to shoot it and then let her shoot it! Never shot a bow in her life…now because of that experience, next October she’s going to be in the hardwoods with us experiencing what my friend Ted likes to call “The Spirit of The Wild”. You can’t get that feeling by sitting in front of a TV screen, or a computer screen or by playing a hunting video! You have to take it outside and do it! And we would be happy to show you how it’s done! Come down to Outdoorama and let my friends and I show you how easy, fun and rewarding it is to live the outdoor life style! I’ll be there all day on Saturday and will do two live broadcasts from there that can be heard on Detroit.com, the new home of Bob Bauer’s Outdoor World, Live from the legendary Camp of the 2 Fires!…see you there!fter a while we made our way over to my old friend Ken Kneelys booth from KD Outdoors, long time sponsor of my outdoor show (we will broadcast from there from 4 to 6pm on Saturday.). An Open Letter To Governor Rick Snyder Sir, I am not a well respected or powerful journalist. Nor am I an astute politician or economist. I don’t know all the ins and outs of the state budget or of the economy at large. There are times when I may misunderstand. But there is one thing for certain…I never mis-experience. I’ve read a lot about your proposed budget for Michigan over the last few days and it is nothing short of dismal to say the least. On a more dramatic note…it’s criminal. First of all the state of Michigan has suffered through an unprecedented sixteen years of bad governance that has killed the economy and devastated the population. That’s not just an observation…it is a fact that cannot be disputed. The thing that bothers me most I think is the fact that you are not willing to listen. To anybody. You won’t even listen to your own advisors and that is disturbing. You are a lone voice with power. In my experience that’s never a good thing. And by the way…you lied sir. You are a liar. Let tell you about my self so maybe you’ll understand where I am coming from. My name is Bob Bauer. For thirty years I have been a radio personality in Detroit. I’ve been a disc jockey, a topic driven talk show host and for the last thirteen years have hosted an outdoor show centered around the Great Lakes region. Most specifically Michigan. I am also the point man in an anti-hunger project called “The Marathon For Meals Food Drive.”. Last year we marked our 26th anniversary of service to southeast Michigan. I do understand that the economy is cyclical but here’s what I’ve noticed in the last 16 years. The economy here has steadily gotten worse. There has been no upside what so ever until recently when things began to look up a little with the help of the tax incentives for the film industry. Mr. Snyder, for almost 30 years I have been involved in the anti-hunger movement here. I’ve met these folks face to face and I’ve heard their stories. The homeless, young mothers who are under educated and can‘t find a decent job because there aren’t any. Alcoholics, drug addicts, the elderly, the under-employed, the under-served, young adults, teens, the working class poor. Since 2008 I have come to know a new segment of the population. Folks who were in the middle and upper-middle class who in the past have struggled from time to time but were reasonably sure that they were still on the upside of things…till now. I moved into Livingston county in 2005/06. At that time Livingston was the fastest growing county in the state and business was booming. The economy here was growing, new housing starts were going through the roof, no pun intended, and new businesses were coming here in droves. In 2008, that came to a screaming halt and everything crashed and burned. Construction companies left whole subdivisions sitting uncompleted…they just left. A new state of the art high school was built in Howell that never started classes because there was a mass exodus of families who took their kids and went else where…mostly out of state! When many of these people left…they just left. They didn’t sell their homes…they abandoned them! They just left sir…and most of them will never come back. Now Livingston county is dead last. It is my personal belief that you have what historians call a “scorched earth policy”. Burn it all and start over. For years now we have been told that “everybody is going to have to sacrifice!”. Now it looks like we are going to be sacrificed! It doesn’t have to be all or nothing Mr. Snyder. As a youngster I was taught that seeking balance is the way…everything in moderation…one step at a time. How much more do we have to give? There isn’t much left to give. If you are successful at getting your entire agenda implemented there will be more destruction and devastation of people. We are not shares of stock, or a product…we are human beings. And we are suffering in unprecedented numbers. Again, the thing that bothers me the most is the fact that you are unwilling to listen to anybody. And by the way, I am truly sorry that people have been making fun of you and calling you names. It’s not right. It has obviously affected your sense of decency and fair play…and that is a shame…for all of us.

Military says Mubarak will meet protesters demands AP – Egyptian medical workers demonstrate in Cairo, Egypt, Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011. Egypt's foreign minister … By MAGGIE MICHAEL, Associated Press – 21 mins ago CAIRO – President Hosni Mubarak will meet the demands of protesters, military and ruling party officials said Thursday in the strongest indication yet that Egypt's longtime president may be about to give up power and that the armed forces were seizing control. Gen. Hassan al-Roueini, military commander for the Cairo area, told thousands of protesters in central Tahrir Square, "All your demands will be met today." Some in the crowd held up their hands in V-for-victory signs, shouting "Allahu akbar," or "God is great," a victory cry used by secular and religious people alike. The military's supreme council was meeting Thursday, without the commander in chief Mubarak, and announced on state TV its "support of the legitimate demands of the people." A spokesman read a statement that the council was in permanent session "to explore "what measures and arrangements could be made to safeguard the nation, its achievements and the ambitions of its great people." The statement was labelled "communique number 1," a phrasing that suggests a military coup. Footage on state TV showed Defense Minster Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi chairing the meeting of two dozen top stern-faced army officers, seated around a table. At Tantawi's right was military chief of staff Gen. Sami Anan. Not present was Mubarak, the commander in chief and a former air force chief, or his vice president, Omar Suleiman, a former army general and intelligence chief named to his post after the protests erupted Jan. 25. The head of the ruling party, Hossam Badrawi, told The Associated Press that he expects that Mubarak will "address the people tonight to respond to protesters demands."

The Giraffe Test 1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator? Stop and think about it and decide on your answer before you scroll down. The correct answer is: Open the refrigerator, put in the giraffe, and close the door. This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way. 2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator? Did you say, Open the refrigerator, put in the elephant, and close the refrigerator? Wrong Answer. Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door. This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your previous actions. 3. The Lion King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals attend .... Except one. Which animal does not attend? Correct Answer: The Elephant. The elephant is in the refrigerator. You just put him in there. This tests your memory. Okay, even if you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to show your true abilities. 4. There is a river you must cross but it is used by crocodiles, and you do not have a boat. How do you manage it? Correct Answer: You jump into the river and swim across. Have you not been listening? All the crocodiles are attending the Animal Meeting. This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes. According to Anderson Consulting Worldwide, around 90% of the Professionals they tested got all questions wrong, but many preschoolers got several correct answers.. Anderson Consulting says this conclusively proves the theory that most professionals do not have the brains of a four-year-old. =

SHE IS QUITE DIFFERENT FROM TRAITOR, JANE FONDA Ann Margret.... This is a good counter-balance story to the Jane Fonda Vietnam Woman Of The Year story. Viet Nam 1966 Richard, (my husband), never really talked a lot about his time in Viet Nam , other than he had been shot by a sniper. However, he had a rather grainy, 8 x 10 black and white photo he had taken at a USO show of Ann Margret with Bob Hope in the background that was one of his treasures. A few years ago, Ann Margret was doing a book signing at a local bookstore. Richard wanted to see if he could get her to sign the treasured photo so he arrived at the bookstore at 12 o'clock for the 7:30 signing. When I got there after work, the line went all the way around the bookstore, circled the parking lot, and disappeared behind a parking garage. Before her appearance, bookstore employees announced that she would sign only her book and no memorabilia would be permitted. Richard was disappointed, but wanted to show her the photo and let her know how much those shows meant to lonely GI's so far from home.. Ann Margret came out looking as beautiful as ever and, as second in line, it was soon Richard's turn. He presented the book for her signature and then took out the photo. When he did, there were many shouts from the employees that she would not sign it. Richard said, 'I understand. I just wanted her to see it.' She took one look at the photo, tears welled up in her eyes and she said, 'This is one of my gentlemen from Viet Nam and I most certainly will sign his photo. I know what these men did for their country and I always have time for 'my gentlemen.'' With that, she pulled Richard across the table and planted a big kiss on him. She then made quite a to-do about the bravery of the young men she met over the years, how much she admired them, and how much she appreciated them. There weren't too many dry eyes among those close enough to hear. She then posed for pictures and acted as if he were the only one there. Later at dinner, Richard was very quiet. When I asked if he'd like to talk about it, my big, strong husband broke down in tears.. 'That's the first time anyone ever thanked me for my time in the Army,' he said. That night was a turning point for him. He walked a little straighter and, for the first time in years, was proud to have been a Vet. I'll never forget Ann Margret for her graciousness and how much that small act of kindness meant to my husband. I now make it a point to say 'Thank you' to every person I come across who served in our Armed Forces.. Freedom does not come cheap and I am grateful for all those who have served their country. If you'd like to pass on this story, feel free to do so. Perhaps it will help others to become aware of how important it is to acknowledge the contribution our service people make. A true Patriot Will Pass This On. A Foreigner In This Country Might Not. Don't be too busy today... Share this inspiring message with friends and family. On behalf of those who DO appreciate all that you did for us, thank you to each of you who receive this message who have served or are serving our country in the armed services or any other service. Super Bowl XLV (Here We Go!) You will rarely see me write about sports. I’m not a “jock strap”, but I am a fan. Football and Hockey, in that order, and number one on the list for me is college football…I’m a Wolverine football fan through and through. And let me say this about that…Brady Hoke…I’m all in and if that makes me a Michigan Homer…I’m good with it. When it comes to sports I will generally leave that media venue to my pals Mark “The Man” Wilson, Rob Parker and Art Regner…and Mitch Albom ain’t bad either! (In my humble opinion Art Regner is one of the best hockey minds in sports media - PERIOD.) For the last two weeks a lot of my friends have been on me to pick the next Super Bowl winner…“You must choose!” First of all…I had the Patriots, Colts, Ravens, Steelers, Packers, Vikings and Bears picked as my favorites to possibly go all the way. So now it’s the Packers and Steelers…WOW…what a game THIS is going to be! Having been born and raised in Detroit, my heart goes with the NFC. The names I most associate with professional football are the ones I grew up listening to and seeing: Lombardi, Halas, Starr, Landry, Staubach, Walter Payton , Johnny U, Jim Brown, Gale Sayers, Ditka (as a player), Butkus, “Mean” Joe Green, Nitschke, “Night Train” Lane, Alex Karras, Mel Farr and so on. I remember the first Super Bowl, Packers -vs.- the Kansas City Chiefs. I was sitting in the back seat of my parents ‘66 Chevy Impala listening to it on the radio while my folks were grocery shopping. It really wasn’t as big a deal then as it is now. The Packers won that game and the next but in Super Bowl III it was the upstart AFL that won the day with “Broadway” Joe Namath, claiming the Jets would win, leading the New York Jets to a win over the heavily favored Baltimore Colts, now the Indianapolis Colts. The trophy the winning team gets is the “Lombardi Trophy”, named after Vince Lombardi the most storied coach in NFL history. The trophy got it’s name in 1970 after Vince died and was awarded for the first time in 1971 to the Baltimore Colts. Fast forward to today. Let’s look at the teams. Before we go there let me say that I believe in the old adage that “Offense wins games…Defense wins championships”. That said…The Packers have: Rodgers, Driver, Jones, Matthews, Shields and my all time defensive player…Charlie Woodson (Michigan!). The Steelers: Rothlisberger, Mendenhall, Lamar Woodley, Polamalu, Foote, and Ike Taylor…and these are the names I pulled off the top of my head! I believe that BOTH teams are great on defense. On offense, both teams have great quarterbacks, running backs and receivers. For the Packers the keys are Rodgers and Woodson. For the Steelers the keys are Rothlisberger and Polamalu. So…what’s my pick…this is the toughest pick I’ve ever had to make. My heart is with the NFC and the Packers…my wallet is with the Steelers…and there you have it.

Friday, February 4, 2011 10:36am PSTAleksander Doba, sapped of strength but nonetheless jubilant, paddled ashore in northeast Brazil on Wednesday afternoon, completing a transatlantic kayaking expedition that lasted almost 99 days and spanned 3,320 miles. It's believed to have been the longest-ever solo-kayaking voyage, in terms of time spent at sea. He spent Wednesday afternoon and evening being checked by doctors and sleeping. On Thursday the 64-year-old Polish adventurer, thickly bearded and disheveled but appearing remarkably fit, told a small gathering in the remote fishing community of Acaraú, that after a little more rest he'd like to climb back in and paddle to the United States. Doba left last Oct. 26 from Dakar in west Africa, aboard a customized 23-foot sea kayak, which is only only 39 inches wide. This was his home for 98 days and 20 hours. Three others have kayaked across the Atlantic: Franz Romer in 1928; Hannes Lindemann in 1956, and Peter Bray in 2001. But none of those expeditions was directly from continent to continent (they utilized offshore islands), and none of those paddlers was a senior citizen. "He's 64 years old! The physical challenge would have broken men half his age," Jeff Moag, editor of Canoe & Kayak magazine, said of Doba. "The amount of will power it took him to keep going is amazing. To any of us who have done a long paddling expedition, it's humbling." Canoe & Kayak followed the odyssey from the outset. It was plagued almost from start to finish by storminess and unfavorable currents. The paddler, whose excursion was plotted via a global satellite positioning unit, covered 680 miles in a straight line before conditions began to work relentlessly against him. In early January his son, Chez Doba, emailed Canoe & Kayak's Conor Mihell and stated to the reporter: "After going in circles for over a month, being stormed on almost every day, being accompanied by barracuda and sharks, who wouldn't be tired?" Doba's vessel has a small forward compartment in which he napped when conditions allowed. His desalination unit stopped functioning automatically on Jan. 11, making it difficult to obtain drinking water; since then he relied largely on gathering rainwater. His meager freeze-dried food supply was supplemented occasionally with fresh fish. At times he had to maneuver over waves measuring 20-plus feet. Doba, an expert whitewater kayaker, carried a satellite phone and Tweeted sporadically. One of his early Tweets: "Since the beginning I see a lot of sharks. Often they surface, but sometimes they stay a few meters underwater. I can only splash, no swimming!" His journey was close to the equator where, he informed his followers, "It's extremely hot. I sleep about 2-3 hours per night. During the day it's impossible." Doba, who speaks almost no English, also relayed messages to his son, which were posted on his blog. On Monday, as a powerful south wind shoved him off-track to the northwest and threatened to delay landing, this was posted on his blog: "I'm very tired. I dream to finally finish, wherever it will be. I'm afraid that the south winds push me so I have to paddle for many days. No! I want dry land as soon as possible." It turned out to be a two-day delay, 50 miles beyond where he had hoped to land. Those two days, Doba assured, were like an eternity. Bob ~ I recently had a conversation with a friend about heros and legends. In todays society we are all to ready to brand somebody a legend or a hero wheather they deserve it or not. I'm not saying this guy is either but he inspires people to "live the dream", seek a higher ground, "be all you can be". As a child I read the adventures of the Kon-Tiki expidition by Thor Heyerdahl...to this day I love a good adventure and have had many throughout my life and times...it's what I live for. Not familiar with Thor Hyerdahl and Kon-Tiki? Look it up! It's what inspired me to be more...to leave it all out on the field. My greatest fear in life is to be laying on my deathbed and think..."MAN...I wish I'd have done THAT!". Life begins where the pavement ends! Now...go get you some!

Posted: 6:15 AM Last Updated: 4 hours and 8 minutes ago OAK PARK, Mich. (WXYZ) - Michigan State Police are searching for a freeway shooter, or shooters, after three drivers report bullets hitting their vehicles. Ballistic testing could determine how many shooters are targeting vehicles traveling on 696 between Coolidge Highway and Woodward Avenue. Investigators tell Action News the time of the day of the incidents has varied. The latest shooting was just reported Sunday evening. No injuries have been reported. Troopers are now on the lookout for anyone suspicious who may be parked near an overpass or on the shoulder of the freeway. If you have any information in the case, you're asked to call Michigan State Police. From Bob ~ So I wonder what would happen if we shot back? Maybe next time I'm through that area I should carry my deer rifle!

We've had a lot of cold weather here in southeast Michigan this winter and now it looks like we're getting poised for a considerable snowfall here in the next day or so. The heavy snow we can do without I think but the extreme cold is another story. For the last few years we have been experiencing severe drought in this part of the country, and for many reasons. One of those reasons is because we haven't experienced a sustained period of freezing temperatures...enough to freeze all of the Great Lakes; Michigan, Huron, Superior, Erie and Ontario, all the way across at the same time. It's been a while since that's happened. When the lakes freeze over they don't experience a high amount of condensation. When they are open...we loose water. It's science. Nothing we can do about that...it's mother natures call. Extreme cold in our region is good because it kills, or at least slows down the bug population to a more manageable level. And in some cases, kills or at least slows down disease that are in the soil. What we need is for the perma-frost line to run deep...six inches or better...every once in a while eight would be REALLY good. That would be especially helpful with things like grubs (Japanese Beatles) and mosquitoes. And here's a tip for you folks who have grubs in your lawn. What you need to do is build up your root system in the lawn so that it's 3 to 4 inches thick...and you don't do that by dumping a ton of nitrogen rich fertilizers on your lawn! Nitrogen is good for greening up your lawn...not the root system. You need phosphorus rich fertilizer...phosphorus, or potash, is the third number on the fertilizer bag. One of the best fertilizers out there is Milorganite. It's good for everything that grows and you can find it just about anywhere AND it won't contaminate ground water and wells. Milorganite...you can find it on the internet. What ever it is you do...STOP SPRAYING BUD DOPE BY THE METRIC TON...IT'S POISON!!! THAT'S WHY IT KILLS BUGS!!! Remember what your mom taught you? All things in MODERATION? Remember? And while we're at it...if you spray...whatever it is you spray is most likely to be toxic to humans and pets and other living things...There are a few simple directions: Follow the manufactures instructions, check which way the wind is blowing (you want to be downwind.), ware a hat, long sleeved shirt, long pants, shoes (rubber is best) and socks, glasses or at least goggles, a respirator or mask and gloves. Remember...prolonged exposure to toxic chemicals will KILL you...that's why they are labeled "TOXIC" ! A quick story. I grew up in a subdivision on the outskirts of the thriving metropolis of Mt. Clemens, Michigan. During that time we had two dogs. We used to walk our dogs down at the end of the sub next to a farmers cornfield...which he sprayed with copious amounts of chemicals and fertilized heavily. Both dogs died of cancer! You folks who have lawn services who come spray your yards might want to be mindful of that. So you see...the cold of winter can be very helpful to those of us who live in the Great Lakes region. Just do us all a favor...be mindful of what you put into the ground...again...there is a reason why these chemicals are marked "TOXIC". It's kind of like exposing the human body to chemotherapy and radiation hoping to kill the cancer and not the person...but that's for another time.

The Music of Detroit.
For sale: World's oldest jazz club. Cozy banquettes. Warm acoustics. Hipster vibe. Vintage '50s décor and curvy bar. Haunted by ghosts of Miles, Dizzy and Coltrane. Worn around the edges. Needs TLC. Minimum bid: $385,000. The fate of Baker's Keyboard Lounge, the legendary joint at Livernois and 8 Mile that's been a pillar of Detroit's nightlife since 1934, will likely be decided Monday when the club is put up for auction in bankruptcy court. Baker's has been integral to Detroit's cultural identity as a jazz mecca for so long, it's hard for musicians, aficionados and even casual fans to conceive of the city without it. Detroit-born saxophone star James Carter, who grew up inspired by the heroes he heard at Baker's, calls it "holy ground." "You join this caravan of cats who have been there and made musical and spiritual contributions beyond measure," he said. Since owner John Colbert filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in August, documents show two written offers made to buy the club, with the high bidder at $385,000. The auction opens a window to all serious bidders. Colbert's realtor, Paul Feldman of Farmington Hills, said he's received queries from a dozen parties who have expressed interest. Colbert can pick among the potential buyers, pending approval by the court. Colbert, who bought the club from Clarence Baker in 1996, desperately wants to sell to someone committed to retaining Baker's historic profile as a jazz club. On the other hand, money talks. "If somebody comes in with a half million dollars and wants to put in a Dollar Castle, I'll have to take the money and run," Colbert said. "But if the offers are close, then it'll go to somebody who I think will keep it a jazz club." Colbert's bankruptcy filing listed liabilities of $458,023 and assets of $377,501, including the Steinway piano that jazz great Art Tatum picked out in a New York showroom in the '50s for Clarence Baker. Feldman said the potential buyers behind the two offers on the table have indicated a desire to keep Baker's a jazz club. Detroit Realtor Pierre LeBlanc, who represents one buyer, declined to comment about his client's plans. The other potential buyer could not be reached.

Literature and knowledge.
I have always been a voracious reader from as far back as I can remember. My mother used to read to me as a very young child. My parents and teachers used to encourage me to read but it wasn't until I was about ten years old that my love of reading exploded! I remember sitting on the couch one afternoon watching the legendary Detroit television host Bill Kennedy on his show "...At The Movies". The movie that day was "The Charge Of The Light Brigade" (1936), staring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. The film was based loosely on Alfred, Lord Tennysons poem commemorating an event that happened during the Crimean War (1853/1856). (You want to know more? Look it up!). While I was watching the English valiantly try to vanquish the Cossack and Russian forces my mom walked past and asked what I was watching. When I told her she quoted Tennysons poem..."Half a league, half a league, half a league onward. Into the valley of death rode the six hundred." She then walked over to the book case and plucked a copy of "The Complete works of Alfred, Lord Tennyson" off the shelf, dropped it into my lap and said "Here, read it for yourself!". And I did...and that led me to "Idylls of the King" which is Tennysons work of twelve narrative poems about the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of The Round Table and introduced me to Grail Lore LONG before Dan Browns book "The Da Vinci Code". Oh, and if you liked "The Da Vinci Code" check out "Bloodline of The Holy Grail" by Sir Laurence Gardner...way beyond Da Vinci Code. I'm not putting Browns book down. I read it and liked it. I like books that incorporate historically accurate information in them. I did think "Angels and Demons" was a better book and movie. But finding Dan Brown led me to Steve Berry who writes the same way...lot's of actual history in his books. I am currently reading Berry's latest "The Emperors Tomb" which is about China and hints at the possibility that fossil fuels might be a renewable resource. Imagine THAT! The other day I was clicking around the TV and came upon the movie "Eldorado", staring John Wayne and James Caan. In the movie Caan quotes a line from the classic Edgar Allen Poe poem "Eldorado": "Over the mountains of the moon, down the valley of the shadow. Ride boldly ride the Shade replied if you seek for Eldorado." So I looked up the poem because in the back of my mind it sounded familiar. Sure enough...Edgar Allen Poe. I had studied his works in school. Reading that poem back then had led me to the story about Eldorado and the Lost City of Gold. THAT led me to read about the Spanish conquest of the Americas which led to how and where the horse came to the Americas which led to to Native American stories about the horse and the plains tribes and Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee, the fur trade in the west which led me back to the research my dad was doing on our family which goes back to 1700 and the beginnings of the City of Detroit which led me to do research on the specials I'm producing right now for udetroitradio "Paradise Valley to Motown: The Rock Starts Here!". What a trail eh? I guess if I had to pick my favorite author it would be Hemmingway and my favorite poet would be Tennyson or Robby Burns. I think my favorite current author/writer would have to be Detroits own Mitch Album. My favorite piece from Mitch was a series he wrote back in the 80's for the Detroit Free Press about the Iditarod Dog Sled Race...LOTS of history involved there! As a kid I read Hemmingway and Jack London (Call of The Wild) and that would explain why I liked the Iditarod piece so much...action, adventure. So I guess what I'm saying is get out from in front of the television and the computer...put the X-Box down pick up a book every once in a while and READ! And by the way...I have a friend, Laura Antonelli who is an up and coming author. You can read some of her stuff here on udetroit...when her book comes out buy it...it's going to be a good one! And who knows where else it will lead you? Reading IS fundamental ! Ok...that's all. You may now return to your regularly scheduled programming...what times the game on ?

The Music of Detroit.
I am a Detroiter born and raised and proud to be so. My people came to Detroit from France around the same time that Cadillac and his boys showed up here in 1700/01 so we've been here since the beginning of so called civilized times in this area...the North West Territories. Thought I knew pretty much everything there was to know about the region and it's people till I hooked up with the folks at Harmonie Park Media, Brian and Mark Pastoria about a year and a half ago. As you've no doubt heard we are in the process of putting together the UDRN, U Detroit Radio Network which will be found right here on udetroit.com. It's taken a lot of work to get ready and we truly hope you enjoy it because it is a labor of love for us. Love for the city we call home...love for it's people and culture and a deep love for the music! Most of the time when you talk to folks about the music of Detroit, Motown is the topic. Sometimes it's the music of the turbulent 60's when Mitch Ryder, The Amboy Dukes, The Bob Seger System, The Rationals and others were prominent on the Detroit airwaves most notably on CKLW and KEENER 13. The Top 40 format was invented, if you will, in Detroit. Or the 70's when Alice Cooper, Grand Funk Railroad (formerly known as Terry Knight and the Pack with CKLW disc jockey Terry Knight as front man.) and groups like Aerosmith, The J. Geils Band and Kiss, who cut their rock and roll teeth in our numerous concert venues like The Grande Ball Room, Cobo Hall, Olympia and The Michigan Palace and in clubs like the Walled Lake Casino, The Red Carpet, The Fruit Cellar and others. Or the 80's when Heavy Metal was king with groups like Seduce, Halloween, The Almighty Strut and let's not forget Adrenalin, DC Drive, BSA, Toby Redd and Rythm Corps rocked places like The Ritz, New York New York, Harpos and the Token Lounge. And then there was the advent of FM Underground Rock Radio, the first of those being WABX which was one of the first 3 "Underground" rock stations in the country along with WBCN, Boston and KMEL in San Francisco. And later WXYZ FM which went on to become venerable rock giant 101 WRIF (BABY!), W4 which at one time broadcast in quad, WLLZ Detroits Wheels which was my home from '83 to '90 before I went to News/Talk, and later Classic Rocker WCSX, one of the first classic rock formats in the country. Recently I started to put together some special programing that will air on the upcoming U Detroit Radio Network, Udetroitradio @ udetroit.com and I was having a conversation with Brian Pastoria, the patriarch of Harmonie Park Studios where the U Detroit brand was created. And he began to tell me about a little of the history of where we are located down on Randolf in Detroit. Up to that point all I was aware of was that it was the Harmonie Park district where the once historic Harmonie Club once thrived. The Harmonie Club was a club started by the German community for the German population. I'm aware of that because my childhood friend John Schroeders mother worked there. As it turns out it was and is now again being called Paradise Valley by the city of Detroit. So I started to research the area and what I found was an amazing history of music and entertainment in our city. I found out about blues great like Emery "Detroit Junior" Williams and his 1931 single, recorded in Detroit, "I Got Money". And there's Bobo Jenkins who recorded here in the 50's on Fortune records and Calvin Fraziers "I'm In The Highway" w/Sam Pittman in 1938. And then theres Blues giant John Lee Hooker who moved to Detroit and is responsible for shaping the modern Blues of today. John Lee broke ALL the rules! And Gospel greats Della Reese, born in Detroit in 1931 and of coarse Aretha Franklin and the Winans Family. Jazz musicians had a huge impact on not only music in Detroit but around the world. Some of the greatest Blues side men in the world have called Detroit home: Elvin Jones and his trio, Marcus Belgrave, Kenny Burrell , Pepper Adams and Donald Byrd who graduated from Cass Tech and Wayne State University. I also discovered a great record from Nolan Strong and The Diablos called "If I (Oh I) recorded at Fortune Records here in 1959 right before Motown was born, which I posted here and is in my video library along with some of the other artists mentioned above. One of the coolest things I found was the old Parliaments classic "I Just Want to Testify" featuring a rather young George Clinton, founder of the whole Funkadelic/ P Funk phenomenon. Amazing! There is a ton of music and music history that I haven't even touched on here like The Funk Brothers and the fact that Detroit is the epicenter of all things Techno. All this and more will be heard on my upcoming specials that will be apart of the upcoming U Detroit Radio Network launch of udetroitradio @ udetroit.com. At udetroitradio it's STILL all about the music...made in Detroit. From Paradise Valley to Motown...The Rock starts here. Stay tuned...
