One of the most overtly politically overt songs on the MC5's Back in the U.S.A., "The American Ruse" illustrates the fact that the youth of the period were being painted into a corner by the powers that be. Singer Rob Tyner warns his audience that following high school, they are mainly targets for either the military industrial complex or a life of paying taxes. This is powerful, revolutionary music, and although often labeled as rhetoric at the time, the statements contained here are as valid as ever. Musically, it's yet another high-octane rocker and loaded with a proto-punk energy that was indeed heavily influential.


They told you in school about freedom 
But when you try to be free they never let ya 
They said "it's easy , nothing to it" 
And now the army's out to get ya

The air's so thick it's like drowning in molasses
