Detroit...Our city, yes...OUR CITY, she belongs to us all. Detroit is a city that has been through so many great times, with a rich and mighty heritage and so many down times, when it seems as if all is lost. But the people who make up this city are some of the strongest around; strong hearts and strong in spirit. You can feel this in many places in and around Detroit; not only "downtown" but in the neighborhoods and places where her citizens gather, work, play and live their lives together.
She has been abandonded, she has been looked down upon, she has been raped and yet her spirit continues. Those who live within the confines of the city limits, love this fine lady. They don't give up on her. They understand her past glory and keep an eye to the future. It will not be politicians, developers or business that will ulitmately re-build her...it will be the people, it IS the people, because the re-birth of Detroit happens every day. We are well aware of all of the problems which she faces; we are not ignorant of her woes. Our hearts break a little each time tragedy knocks on her door. But she will not be foresaken. The people of Detroit will not give up on her.
I was born and raised far from her city limits but my heart lies with this beautiful city. I take offense at those who choose to disrespect her, call her names and insult her character. She should be treated as a treasure...there is no other city like her anywhere in the world, and I love her. I still must only visit her, but each time I cross 8 Mile Road, my heart beats a little faster and I am so glad to be in her company once more. Detroit is my city and your city...If you haven't visited in a while, please do; share in the spirit that is uniquely Detroit. Become part of the solution, support her and get to know her all over again.
